(ENGR) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES ON THERMAL ENGINES

3 Credits | 300 Level | 42 Contact hours

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND COURSE MATERIALS

There is no required text for this course.

DESCRIPTION

The course is intended to deepen students knowledge about the experimental techniques currently used for evaluating the performance of combustion engines, and specially reciprocating internal combustion engines. It will focus on the specific characteristics of the most appropriate instrumentation to measure engine performance (torque, engine speed, fuel consumption) and emissions of pollutants, as well as on the specific techniques used for the analysis of injection and combustion systems, gas management and turbocharging. The suitability and feasibility of each of the techniques used for recording the most useful engine parameters will be evaluated.
Besides lectures, experimental measurements will be performed by students in appropriate experimental facilities.

LEARNING GOALS

1. Define the thermodynamic cycle and size compact turbine power units
2. Define test methodologies to evaluate small turbines
3. Select most adequate instrumentation for each performance parameter

PROGRAM CONTEXT

1. Gas turbine cycle analysis, components
2. Performance metrics
3. Data acquisition, frequency analysis and uncertainty
4. Intrusive measurement techniques
5. Optical measurement techniques
